Liberia IGF National Coordinator Meets Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Ahead of UN IGF 2025 in Oslo
–From Monrovia to Oslo: Liberia’s Digital Future Takes Global Spotlight at 2025 UN Internet Governance Forum
June 20,2025-On the eve of Liberia’s participation in the UN Internet Governance Forum (UN IGF) 2025 in Oslo, Norway, Liberia IGF National Coordinator Mr. Peterking Quaye paid a courtesy call to Hon. Sekou M. Kromah, who now serves as Liberia’s Minister and Postmaster General at the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. The visit at the Ministry’s Monrovia headquarters underscores a shared resolve to advance Liberia’s digital transformation agenda and elevate its international visibility.
Hon. Kromah—appointed in early 2024—brings renewed energy to the Ministry’s mission. Under his leadership, the Ministry has rolled out a national broadband expansion initiative, begun implementing a postal address system, and launched a partnership with C-squared Liberia to deploy Wi‑Fi connectivity in Bong and Nimba Counties. These achievements complement earlier programs not limited to Girls in ICT Day, significantly extending digital services beyond urban areas.
Originally launched in 2015, the Liberia IGF was rejuvenated in 2020 and recognized by the UN IGF Secretariate based in Geneva , Switzerland, following a regional push to strengthen National and Regional Internet Governance Forums (NRIs) in West Africa. This rebirth transformed the platform into a dynamic, inclusive annual event bringing stakeholders—government, civil society, private sector, youth, and academia—together to deepen digital policy dialogue. Since the rebirth, the Ministry and Liberia IGF have collaborated closely on several front.
Hon. Kromah actively participated in the 2024 Liberia IGF, held under the theme “Strengthening Liberia’s Digital Future through Inclusive Governance.” In his keynote address, he emphasized, “Digital inclusion is not a luxury—it is a national development imperative. Liberia must position itself to lead and not lag in West Africa’s digital future.”
Four Strategic Collaboration Areas Ahead of UN IGF 2025
During their meeting, Mr. Quaye and Minister Kromah agreed to intensify cooperation in four critical areas:
- Enhancing multi-stakeholder policy forums: Jointly organizing pre-IGF national dialogues on data rights, privacy protections, and digital literacy to feed into Liberia IGF and broader policy channels.
- Technical working groups: Establishing thematic task forces to operationalize the AI Policy and Data Protection Act, enforce cybersecurity standards, and support CSIRT capability building.
- Digital diplomacy through global engagement: Co-managing Liberia’s booth at the UN IGF to showcase national achievements and attract investments and technical partnerships.
- Youth and inclusivity programs: Scaling up the Liberia Digital Youth Academy and targeted tech training for women and girls in partnership with universities and innovation hubs.
Liberia is poised for a pivotal year in 2025, marked by several strategic milestones. These include active participation at the UN IGF in Oslo, where the Liberia IGF booth will feature interactive presentations via all the Liberia IGF social media pages . Liberia will also host the 2025 MRU IGF (Mano River Union), bringing together stakeholders from Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia to deepen collaboration on cybersecurity, data protection, and digital inclusion. Additionally, the 2025 edition of the Liberia IGF will emphasize cross-sector policy implementation and building a vibrant innovation ecosystem. Complementing these policy events is the continued roll-out of national broadband expansion, improvements in the postal addressing system, and rural connectivity initiatives through the C-Squared Liberia partnership.
The synergy between Minister Kromah’s Ministry and the Liberia IGF signals a strategic leap forward in digital governance. Minister Kromah, whose tenure has already seen significant digital and postal initiatives, reaffirmed his Ministry’s commitment, “Our dedication is to ensure that every Liberian—irrespective of location—benefits from connectivity, data security, and digital opportunity. Through active partnership with the Liberia IGF, we are ready to translate policy into progress.”
Mr. Quaye echoed this sentiment, “Liberia’s presence at UN IGF 2025 is proof of our progress—not just in policy, but in implementation, infrastructure, and meaningful citizen engagement. With Minister Kromah’s leadership, we are lifting Liberia’s digital story onto the global stage.”
Minister Kromah and the Liberia IGF envision a future where digital governance is inclusive, secure, and innovation-driven. The Liberia IGF booth in Oslo aims to spotlight Liberia’s journey—from rural Wi‑Fi projects to robust legal frameworks—and affirm that small nations can lead in global digital discourse. Participation at UN IGF 2025, hosting of MRU IGF, and domestic IGF preparations set the pace for a digitally empowered Liberia, ready to contribute to regional and global internet governance in meaningful ways.
